GW Career Center Resources

Graduate students and alumni of TSPPPA have access to the many services offered from The GW Career Center (GWCC), the University’s general career services office.

Located at 1922 F Street and at http://gwired.gwu.edu/career, the GWCC has many on-site and online resources and events available that will be a great benefit to your career search.

Career Campaign
A biannual program held in the fall and spring is designed to introduce GW students to the services of the Career Center, including orientations, workshops, career and job fairs, and special events. More information on the Career Campaign can be found at GWCC's web site.

Career Fairs
GWCC sponsors fall and spring career fairs for GW students and alumni. Organizations represent a variety of career fields and recruit for internships, full-time and part-time jobs, and. The GWCC also sponsors a job and internship fair in the spring for those looking for summer internships or employment.

Career Center Info Listserv (CCInfo)
The subscription-based email distribution list delivers up-to-date information about GWCC programs and services, as well as other career-related information.

CareerSearch!
CareerSearch! is a highly interactive tool designed to assist job seekers in researching careers, industries, and potential employers. While the tool does not include specific job listings, it does provide invaluable information needed to uncover what the recruiting industry refers to as the "hidden" job market—the more then 90% of available jobs that are not advertised either in newspapers or on the Internet. Using CareerSearch!, you can search over 2 million organizations listed in the system using criteria such as field, industry, location, key words and phrases, and then save and download the information. The system also has components to help you determine the salary level for you field in cities around the U.S., and it provides detailed demographic and lifestyle information for key U.S. cities. Career Alumni Network
The GW Career Advisor Network is an online directory of GW alumni who have volunteered to offer insight about their careers and professional experiences. This is a resource for alumni and students seeking career-related information and advice. GW alumni volunteer to become advisors by creating an online advisor profile through which they provide professional information about themselves, note career-related topics they are willing to discuss, and indicate networking assistance they are able to provide. Students and alumni seeking to network with alumni advisors use the network’s customized search function to select advisor profiles based on their professional interests. Searchable fields include employer type, employer name, industry, job function, career stage, job title, advisor location, GW school or a combination of these fields. The Career Advisor Network is not an employment service or a job board, but it is a great way to learn about careers and career industries and to make potentially valuable connections with GW alumni. The Career Advisor Network is a free service for GW students and alumni who are members of the Alumni Online Community and is the result of a partnership between the Office of Alumni Relations and the GW Career Center.

Consulting
Career Consultants are available daily during drop-in hours to discuss career planning, refine job search strategies and skills, and to help locate career-related resources. No appointment is necessary; however, pre-scheduled appointments are also available.

Federal Work Study Program
Graduate students who qualify for Work Study funds can contact the GWCC to get the necessary information and paperwork for the program. Work Study positions are also available through the GWork, the online recruiting program.

GWork Recruitment System
Available exclusively to GW students and alumni online, the GWork system contains all federal work study positions, part-time and full-time employer opportunities, paid and unpaid internships, and temporary opportunities. You can log into the GWork system at http://gwired.gwu.edu/career.

Mock Interviews
Simulated interviews with a career consultant are available at the Center. These sessions are video taped and critique. Students and alumni may also take advantage of the InterviewStream system, which is a web-based system that helps them practice interviewing. Participants can register online and can do the interview at the Career Center's office or, if they have a web camera, can practice and view their results at home.

Networking Nights
The GWCC coordinates annual networking events in New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. Students and alumni gather to discuss career opportunities in these metropolitan areas.

On-Campus Recruiting
Employers visit the campus in the fall and spring semesters each year to conduct interview. Students and alumni (within two semesters following graduation) are eligible to register for the OCR program.

Reciprocity
The Center processes a formal request on a students' or alumni's behalf that enables the use of services of other college or university career centers.

Recruiter-in-Residence
This is GWCC's award winning program that connects experienced recruiters donating their time with students and alumni at GW. Students meet with visiting employers who work in government agencies and the public-policy research, consulting and professional staffing industries. These recruiters help with career planning, resumes, interview skills, short mock interviews, and other related issues.

Resume Collection
A formal program to provide resumes to employers who wish to interview students at their company site.

Workshops
The Career Center offers a number of workshops throughout the year to assist with developing effective career decisions and job-search strategies. Check out the calendar on their website for scheduled workshops.
